Naofumi went on a task to deliver herbicide on a village who was overrun by vines that turn into monsters. The village was ravaged by famine when the Spear Hero visited and gave them a miracle seed that quickly grew plants and bore fruits. However, the plants grew too much that it overwhelmed the entire village. Naofumi agreed to help the villagers even though he didn’t like the idea of cleaning up Motoyasu’s mess. With the help of Filo and Rapthalia, they exterminate the monsters on the plants and save the village from further famine.

At a hot springs town a few days later, Raphtalia and Filo decided to give Naofumi a rare egg and a crystal as a token of gratitude. Their plan didn’t work as a silver razor back destroy the nest where the rare items lay. In the end, they went back to town trading the wild boar for a special tool for Naofumi’s gem works instead.

At the dress shop, Naofumi asks the dressmaker to make Filo custom clothes that don’t tear every time she transforms. The owner explains she needs a Magic Thread in order to make such request. At the Magic Shop, the owner told them she can’t make the thread because the gemstone required to make it is broken. Naofumi then goes on a quest in search for a new gemstone. Along the way, they helped a man give medicine back to his sick mother and escorted a wealthy trader from bandit attacks. The impressed trader introduces Naofumi to other influential traders allowing them to easily locate the gemstone they’re looking for. Inside a temple, Naofumi, Raphtalia, Filo, and the Magic Shop Owner fought against demon bats and a legendary Japanese yōkai, Nue, claiming the needed gemstone to make the dress. Finally, the Dressmaker gives Filo a new dress that doesn’t tear whenever she transforms.

Raphtalia insists to get another slave seal as a symbol of faith to Naofumi. While there, Naofumi buys a Filolial egg which later hatches into a small bird and named it Filo. Similar to demi-humans, Filolials grows quickly as it levels up. During their visit to Lute Village, Naofumi was alarmed to see Motoyasu and Malty imposing heavy taxes to the villagers. Naofumi tries to interfere but the Queen’s envoys suddenly appear and gave Malty a message. Disturbed by the message, Malty challenges Naofumi to a race where the winner acquires the village. Despite Malty’s guards using magic to cheat for advantage, Naofumi and Filo still manage to win against Motoyasu and his dragon. As a reward, Malty and Motoyasu left and the villagers offer them a carriage and Trader’s Pass. The next day, they woke up surprised to find Filo transformed into a little girl with wings.

The Rising Of The Shield Hero is a Japanese light novel created by Aneko Yusagi which originally published as a web novel and later adapted into a twelve volume manga series by Aiya Kyū.

In a short interview with the author, Naofumi was inspired from a defence-specialised crusader character in “Ragnarok Online”.

Demi-Humans adapt to its most efficient form based on their levels. This is why Raphtalia’s body grew quickly in a span of a week. Her physical appearance may look mature but her mental maturity still remains as a 10-year-old.

Kaito Ishikawa, the voice actor of Naofumi, also voices over Tenya from My Hero Academia and Tobio from Haikyuu. While Asami Seto, the voice actress of Raphtalia, voices over Chihaya from Chihayafuru and Mai from Bunny Girl Senpai.

There’s a comedy spin-off story about the Spear Hero, Motoyasu Kitamura, called The Reprise of the Spear Hero.
